What is a Shalom Vesper Service?
The Shalom Vesper Service is held in the more intimate setting of the Chapel. The
term "shalom" is rich in meaning in the Hebrew context and points to full societal
and personal well being, coupled with righteousness which is possible only as a gift
of God. Come, and find peace and wholeness in this early evening service. "In
the face of Jesus is the peace that passes all understanding . . . the everlasting
Sabbath . . . Shalom!" From Searching for Shalom by Ann Weems.
Do other Presbyterian churches hold Shalom Services for Wholeness?
Yes. Our Shalom Service follows the basic pattern set out in the Presbyterian Book
of Common Worship. Some churches hold these services every week; others several
times a year. Since January 2001 we have been holding them the third Sunday
of each month at 5:00 p.m.
What is a Shalom Vesper Service like?
Here at First Presbyterian our Shalom Service is done in a contemplative manner. We
sing and play special music (similar to Taizé), light candles, and encourage
participants to quiet the mind and focus on God. We use guided meditation along with
scripture readings. At every service participants have an opportunity to receive
individual prayers and anointing by the Pastor. We conclude each service with
a joyful and informal agape communion meal.
Who comes to Services for Wholeness?
People who are concerned about someone or something happening in the world who seek
the prayers of the community of faith. Everyone is welcome to this service.
Join us! If you need more information
about the service, please contact the church office at 630-668-5147.
